Lightning arrester
Lightning Arrester
A lightning arrester, often referred to as a lightning rod or surge arrester, is a device designed to protect buildings, structures, and electrical systems from the damaging effects of lightning strikes and electrical surges. Lightning arresters are installed on tall structures, such as buildings, towers, and utility poles, and they are commonly used in areas prone to thunderstorms.
Lightning Rod: The primary component of a lightning arrester is the lightning rod, also known as an air terminal or lightning conductor. This rod is typically made of a highly conductive material, such as copper or aluminum, and is attached to the highest point of a structure.
Grounding: The lightning rod is connected to a network of conductive materials, such as copper or aluminum cables or down conductors, which are securely grounded to the Earth.
Electrostatic Discharge: When a lightning strike occurs, the lightning rod provides a path of least resistance for the lightning’s electrical discharge. The highly conductive rod attracts the lightning strike, allowing it to flow safely through the rod.
Protection: Lightning arresters provide protection against lightning strikes, which can cause fires, structural damage, and damage to electronic equipment.
Safety: By safely directing lightning strikes to the ground, lightning arresters reduce the risk of injury or harm to occupants of the building or structure.
